Joining and Training

The Club provides the chance for swimmers to learn about and develop their swimming performance. It also provides the opportunity for swimmer parents to contribute to the running of the Club, events etc. Please see the Parent Agreement which we require the parents of Club swimmers to support.

The club is divided into four training squads. As a competitive club, hard work and commitment are the key to development through the squads.

Club night is on Wednesday evening and all squads will swim during the club night. Out with club night, sessions are by invitation. The decision on who trains in an invitational sessions is the decision of the head coach, whose decision is final.

C Squad

C squad is our entry level squad to the club and is skill based and technical. The following are key criteria the club uses to assess C squad swimmers. For more information about criteria and expectations, please see the C Squad Swimmer Agreement;

• Swimmers should be aged between 7-11yrs, which allows them to enter mini meet competitions,

• C squad is broken down into progressive stages so we can assess each swimmer on their progress, each stage will contain different components of learning and distances,

• Swimmers should be prepared to commit to all sessions asked as the long-term benefit of this will show at a later stage in their development,

• Swimmers will be offered another session when coaches think they are ready to progress further,

• Swimmers should be able to cover all distances at 25m/50m/100m depending on competition age group and have good aerobic conditioning with legal starts, turns and strokes,

• If swimmers have the required skills and technique, they will be expected to swim in local home-based swim meets. There are 4 mini meets for ages 11 and under. There are a number of further meets for older swimmers to attend,

• A swimmer who is not showing signs of progression or willingness to learn or compete, will be reviewed by the coaching team,

• A key requirement of membership of the club is for swimmer parents to volunteer and make a contribution to help running the club, meets etc. This will be monitored by the club and reviewed by the committee/coaches. Failure in a parent contributing may result in a swimmer having to leave the club,

To move up to B squad your coach will assess swimmers on all of the above and see that strokes are technically legal, that you have passed the criteria required and that you are willing to compete at club level in the local area.

B Squad

Swimmers will start to understand terminology used in swimming, use more advanced training methods and will do more distance in training. Further you will be expected to adopt a good work ethos. Self-discipline is required from the swimmer to be able to put the dedication in to your sport if you desire to fulfil your potential.

Swimmers in this group will start to work towards DRP (District Regional Squad times) these times will be put forward and looked at by Scottish swimming who make a selection every year from hundreds of other swimmers, who can then be put forward for extra training at  North District Level.
Competition is a measure of improvement. Swimmers will be expected to travel to meets away from home, and be competing regularly.
Swimmers Programme will be based on 200m I.M programme along with all individual strokes, and aiming for 200m times by this stage.
Transfer to A squad will depend on attendance levels, commitment to swimming, being mentally ready to take the next step to a higher standard. You should also be aiming at 10%-15% National times as in your agreement.
Some swimmers may be offered a place in a junior fitness squad at this time if they are unable to compete on a regular basis.

Swimmers will be expected to compete in at least 8-12 competitions per year and you should be aiming for 5% National times as in your agreement.
